more than meets the eye

While I was shopping in Times Square today, there was yet another promotion going on. This time it was for Transformers. Transformers Fever Forever. On display were movie toys and action figures. Cool. On display were these girls posing as I dunno what. Not so cool. I couldn't help but laugh as I was taking the photo. I hope the girls didn't notice since I was right in front of them. But I think they were too busy channeling female Autobots.

flat 9/a is in disarray

While I was attempting to clean my flat, I found a post-it note with this quote written on it:

'A messy house is a sign of a robust inner state - it requires courage and strength of mind.'

- Alain de Botton

bla bla bra

I went to a bra shop the other day called bla bla bra. The bras are quite nice, reasonably priced and even come with a charm. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the charms that I got, but they're still cute. I even got a pouch with my purchase, which is posted below. Only in Hong Kong would you get charms with your bras. But that's not the strange part. When I got home, I cut off the tag and noticed that it wasn't a typical tag, it was more like a booklet. I opened it and there are illustrations of different bras with bodies. The nips are eyes. There are seventeen drawings of these 'citizens of bla city'. And this is their story:

we never sleep
we have dreams
Welcome to our bla city ...

What I want to know is: Who comes up with this stuff?!?

delay no more

Back in July, I was doing a video shoot at work and one of the kids came up to me and said 'Nice shirt'. I had bought it from G.O.D. (Goods of Desire), one of my favourite shops in Hong Kong. There isn't anything special about my shirt. It just says:

I NEED 2TIX
I HAVE DO$H
A 1965 SIGNED
DELAY NO MORE
TEE FROM H.k.

I just thought it was one of those T-shirts that didn't make any sense. You can find a lot of those in HK. But I found out it DID mean something. I was having dinner with my friend and she was talking about how her friend bought her son a shirt that said 'Delay No More' because her son was always late. The conversation went something like this:

L: Oh, I have one of those shirts.
D: Do you know what it means?
L: Uh, Delay No More? No ...
D: It's something crude ...
L: (a light bulb suddenly appears over my head) Oh my gosh, it's actually 'diu neih louh mou'! I've been wearing this shirt to work for weeks!

According to my 'A Dictionary of Cantonese Slang' (yes, I actually have this dictionary), diu neih louh mouh means: [f**k your mother] used to describe obscene abuse, agression, strong emphasis, surprise or amazement.

So that's why that kid said 'Nice shirt'.

A few days ago, I went with my mom to G.O.D. and she picked out a shirt that had Delay No More scribbled all over it. I said nay and opted for a different one. If she only knew what it really meant ...
